Courtly & urban textiles

These silk and cotton textiles were made for the Indian domestic market in urban workshops by professional craftspeople. From floor-coverings to costumes and tent-hangings to sarees, they had different uses and patrons and employed a diverse array of techniques – printed, painted and dyed, embroidered, and woven.

What they share in common, however, is exemplary design, technical mastery, and skillful execution.
